Few in the readership probably notice. That said, I'm one of the few that notice. I like to explore interesting backgrounds, but what's most important to me is something witty in the background. Like the words on the whiteboard in Smoke This. Complicated backgrounds are fun, too, but most important, of course, is the content of the actual toon. So I wouldn't get too hung up on the backgrounds. Now, in today's toon you could have had someone vomiting in the background, because that's how I feel about scents.
