Noah has, for whatever reason, taken to the idea of spraying himself with chemicals in order to make himself smell good. Not in an overpowering sense, like the vile Axe brand, but rather light, sweet odors that remind one of crisp snow-covered mountainsides and delicate brooks. I happened to be present while he examined various brands, gently sniffing at sometimes eye-watering scents sprayed on papers. Although he did not make a purchase, we thought you foul-smelling ones out there might appreciate a helpful guide.

I don’t believe in cologne products, as scentless seems like a pretty neutral road to travel. If I can avoid sending off any kind of odor, I am perfectly content. It also allows me to sneak up on people much more easily, as I am able to dart from rafter to rafter before leaping down upon my quarry.

A true bane of my existence are my comic backgrounds. While a friend was watching me draw, I told him that whenever I make a sh*tty background, I just plop some Gaussian Blur over it, and BAM, okay background.

I am concerned though, because I feel like this is lazy and is something of a cheat to do. I sometimes work on making elaborate backgrounds, but those can take forever, and even then I am sometimes not happy with them. I am really impressed with Penny Arcade’s backgrounds, as they are usually nothing more than a few different colors with a texture overlain, but somehow they are able to capture a simplified complexity that leaves me absolutely baffled. I would be interested to hear what you all think of my backgrounds? What type of backgrounds do you prefer? Any tips? Am I over thinking this? I really want to hear from you!

I am afraid that I have an addiction to iPhone apps. The 99 cent price tag is dangerous, it is “less than a dollar,” so I feel no guilt whatsoever purchasing one. They quickly accumulate, and I become insatiable for fresh content. I am currently enjoying Zombieville USA, Flight Control, and Doodle Jump immensely. And they are all 99 cents which almost feels like robbery. I am actually really interested in what folks are making with the software provided on the iPhone. I really feel like some folks are taking advantage of it in some interesting ways.

My Call of Cthulhu obsession is only growing deeper. My rulebook arrived in the mail today, and even right now, I want to continue pouring over the detailed systems, absorbing the information and plotting a game. The mere concept of making players roll to discover how many sanity points they have lost by peering at an eldritch horror makes me shiver with anticipatory delight. I have reached an point of geekiness from which there is no return.

So, next Tuesday? Same spot?

I spent $50 on printing at Kinko’s yesterday. No freakin’ joke.

    Dude,
The backgrounds? Man, just chill out. Everything is fine. Everything is cool. You’re using your brain too much Dude. Hang out in the rafters and just be M-E-L-L-O-W.

Yep, you are overthinking the backgrounds. Few in the readership probably notice. That said, I’m one of the few that notice. I like to explore interesting backgrounds, but what’s most important to me is something witty in the background. Like the words on the whiteboard in Smoke This. Complicated backgrounds are fun, too, but most important, of course, is the content of the actual toon. So I wouldn’t get too hung up on the backgrounds.

Now, in today’s toon you could have had someone vomiting in the background, because that’s how I feel about scents. Scents are for animals in heat or marking territory!

I don’t get it. What’s those round things beside the tv in panel one?

Okay, good to know that I am over thinking the backgrounds.

And that “TV” is supposed to be a bottle of cologne, and the round things are fingers.

    Ah, that makes (more) sense.
