A Chance Encounter (Part 1)

Prom is coming. It’s very close and boy is it going to be interesting. You see this is the first time I have been given the opportunity to go. So Nathan and I thought it would be a good idea to devote this week’s comic theme to the Prom experience.  We then realized we didn’t know anything about it so we decided to take it in a different direction. The fact that it has not happened yet means we don’t know what the experience really is. So it is merely an abstract design of any experience at all, ever. At least you may look at it that way if you so choose. Now you might be curious as to the details of my prom plans. The truth is much of ”the Plan” is a mystery to me. I do have a date, so I’m not going solo or anything but the details are unknown right now. People keep telling me they want to do this and that so it’s a mixed message right now.

The story behind my Prom adventure starts with my pursuit of a partner. Luckily I was able to get someone to go with my sorry ass, however I didn’t really ask her in the “Proper” manner, or so I am told. So I decided to make it up to her by asking her again but with some urban charm thrown in to make it more interesting. I decided to get Nathan to draw a picture of her and I sitting in the restaurant where I would re-ask her. It depicted me handing her the picture that I would be handing her in reality, while I was asking her if she would go with me. Her speech bubble was even left blank so she could write in her answer. A paradox in other words. A work of genius.

Yet my plans didn’t really go as I wanted. The idea was for me to ask her to lunch at the same restaurant Nathan drew in the picture. Ok, this part went well but then things got complicated. On the day in question I walked into school early to talk to her brother who happens to be a good friend of mine. But he wasn’t alone, another person was there. This other person, who will remain nameless, then decided to sabotage every element of my plan. First, he told me that it was a stupid idea because I already asked her and it would never go anywhere anyway. I then preceded to explain to him my reasoning behind it. I just wanted to make a better impression so that I’m not seen as a complete slob by all civilized people. In the end he failed to grasp my logic and continued to try to dissuade me because he felt that it was best.  John( the brother) then asked me if I had the picture with me. I told him that I did and what place I was planning to ask her. The Other responded by saying “You have to do it today!”. Confused, I asked “why?” and he responded “Because we’re going there today”.

What the F#*%!!! I am not going to ask someone to prom while a posse of my “friends” sit at another table giggling and shooting interested glances at me! It totally defeats the purpose of the whole thing. A little later, we made plans for John and his date to go with us. This would have worked out fine if the Other hadn’t decided to tag along for some ungodly reason. This coupled with my date’s friend’s company led to something I really didn’t want to happen. I can’t blame her friend because she had no idea what I was planning to do, but the Other on the other hand knew exactly what I was planing to do. This made me very very uncomfortable, and me being a bit of a shy individual, I struggled to make small talk with an annoying satellite hovering over me the whole time. He probably said no more than five sentences the whole time, he just stood there ( or sat there) a weight on my conscience. I’m thankful for the charismatic charm of John, who managed to separate them from us for a minute with the power of his speech. Truthfully, the actual asking part went over quite well and I owe a great deal to Nathan for bringing my image to life through his art. The Other just stained my experience, he made me uneasy, and impaired my ability to communicate through his awkward presence. I can only hope that the Prom itself has less of this person’s unwanted interference.

On a lighter note I would like to change the subject to a topic that is very close to my heart: Movies. Here is a well constructed trailer for a film that I really want to see. Enjoy…

    Noah Dude,
The Dude’s got to tell you something. NEVER solicit opinions or advice from the dudes in your posse when it comes to chicks. The experience that your posse has when it comes to the faier sex fits in a mouse-size thimble.

In my humble opinion, your plan, with the cartoon, was ballsy and brilliant. High risk yields big returns.

LOVED the comic. Can’t wait to see where it goes on Thursday.

I would love to be able to relay a story like Joel’s (jacketpotatoe) in order to make you feel better, Noah, but unfortunately I was asked by two interested parties. I guess some got it, and some don’t. We can’t all be so sought after.

Actually, the story isn’t nearly as sexy as I would like you to believe, but it is awfully fun to tease with.

Thanks Lost and Lebowski, glad you guys liked the comic. And Lost, I would be happy to let you know how the comic will go on Thursday . . . on Thursday.

To Noah: Your idea was absolutely great! Sorry your “posse” messed with it so much. I think the one guy was incredibly JEALOUS.

To Nathan and Noah: Great Comic. So, that’s what you guys do on dates these days….get your hair braided?!?!? Interesting.
